The American Leadership Initiative had a successful policy dinner with five members of Congress and senior staff, along with thought leaders from business, think tank and civil society communities. The discussion centered on developing a new vision for restoring values-based global leadership through smart and robust diplomacy, development and trade policies.
Key discussion topics included:
The importance of domestic policies and programs to restore economic opportunity and ensure a safety net for all Americans, which is essential to enable the restoration of American global leadership.
The need to strengthen and reform international alliances and institutions. America cannot go it alone.
The need for a coherent strategy to address the rise of China, pursuing a coordinated approach with allies, along with institutional and policy reforms (including at the World Trade Organization).
Many countries welcome China’s financial assistance but want it balanced with U.S. involvement. They want the values and diversity that American government, businesses and civil society organizations bring.
The U.S. needs to stay engaged internationally in order to set international rules for the future.
