The American Leadership Initiative (ALI) convened leading China experts for a discussion on the Trump–Xi summit and its implications for the future of U.S.–China relations. Panelists examined the summit’s outcomes and the broader trajectory of strategic competition between the two countries, focusing on trade and tariffs, emerging technologies, critical minerals, Taiwan security, and the role of U.S. alliances. The discussion highlighted the unusual nature of the Summit, including President Trump receiving President Xi on the tarmac, and the limited impact it will likely have to address the underlying challenges in the bilateral relationship.

Experts emphasized the need for a more coordinated, long-term U.S. strategy to strengthen economic and national security, support domestic industrial capacity, and compete with China in critical and emerging technologies. Panelists discussed opportunities for congressional action during the lame duck and the next congressional term, on issues including industrial policy, supply-chain resilience, and modernizing U.S. trade tools. The conversation underscored the importance of bipartisan legislative engagement, and cooperation with partners to advance U.S. leadership and respond effectively to China’s growing economic and technological capabilities.
