The Potential for an Environmental Goods and Services Agreement

ALI hosted senior Congressional staff, companies, and think tanks to discuss possibilities for using trade to advance U.S. climate goals and, specifically, the prospects for an agreement reducing trade barriers on environmental goods and services. Participants noted the Resolution to Open New Markets for American Clean Energy Products, Create Jobs, Reduce Emissions issued by Representatives DelBene and Brady in December 2022 and which endorses such an agreement. An environmental goods and services agreement would be a win-win for both boosting environmental goals and creating green jobs.

ALI Convenes Discussion on Supply Chains and Data

ALI hosted a group of experts to discuss the role of data in building resilient supply chains. Participants recognized efforts by both Congress and the Administration in this area, including the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, as well as the Executive Order on America’s Supply Chains. Much learning has come out of the past few years of supply chain disruptions from COVID-19 and the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and both the government and the private sector looking at ways to increase the use of data to drive transparency and resiliency through supply chains.

ALI hosted a webinar on the national and economic impacts of the global food crisis. Experts outlined the ways that food insecurity impacts national security, including contributing to terrorism; causing political instability or fragility; and buying influence through food. The World Food Program will be a strong mitigating force as the Russia-Ukraine conflict continues. Experts noted that the United States should continue efforts on sustainable production and pointed out that the increase in food prices around the world hurts food insecure populations first.
