ALI hosted a robust conversation on U.S. -China policy with Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi, Hayley Stevens, Ami Bera and Stacey Plaskett.  The discussion highlighted the reality and necessity of engagement and doing business with China, while continuing to limit their access to key U.S. technologies. Members applauded the Administration’s steps to bolster U.S. competitiveness, including investing in innovation and industrial policy, while continuing to shore up and expand relationships with allies.  The conversation highlighted the need for the U.S. to intensify its economic engagement in Africa and Latin America where many countries are interested in U.S. economic partnership and engagement, often as a result of debt traps from Belt and Road projects. There was also discussion of the need for the U.S. to have more extensive funding available for U.S. companies looking to invest in the developing world, in order to compete with China’s subsidized financing.
