  • Counselor Kazumichi Nagaoka of Japan

ALI hosted a dynamic discussion at the residence of New Zealand Ambassador Rosemary Banks, together with Dutch Ambassador Birgitta Tazelaar,  Japanese Economic Counselor Kazumichi Nagaoka, Rep. Ami Bera (CA-6), and Rep. Brendan Boyle (PA-2). The conversation centered on how America’s friends and allies are navigating this challenging time marked by turbulent tariffs and unpredictable policies coming from the Trump Administration, with a focus on how Congress can support our partnerships and help shape a new global economic architecture for the future.

The group reflected on the breakdown of post-WWII architecture, noting how old institutions are no longer relevant for this new age. The group agreed that the current upheaval is also an opportunity.  The U.S. and our allies now have an opportunity to build new institutions that will address geostrategic and technological changes that have begun to transform the world and will shape the next 75 years. Both the public and private sector must collaborate together to build this future. AI is a major inflection point which will force a change in policies and institutions, but also gives us the opportunity to discuss upskilling, capacity building and create industrial policy that addresses workforce challenges. The U.S. must be strategic and work with its allies to develop new institutions and policies that meet the moment and keep China from leading the AI future.
