ALI convened a high-level group for a conversation with Senator Kim to discuss how the U.S. can develop a new paradigm for economic and national security.
Senator Kim emphasized that both Democrats and Republicans must work together to help everyday Americans understand the importance of international trade, relationships with allies, and innovation in maintaining the U.S. competitiveness and global leadership.
The group agreed that U.S. competitiveness is the right lens to discuss the importance of global engagement, and that for the U.S. to succeed, we must not bifurcate issues into domestic and international channels. Both are important and impact the challenges we face with China and other adversaries.
There was discussion about reframing foreign assistance as part of the U.S. toolbox to be a global leader, along with military, and economic strength.
Senator Kim concluded by asking the business community to meet with Congress to discuss what they need to succeed.
ALI will be working with Members of Congress and other key stakeholders in the months ahead to develop a concrete agenda to rebuild American economic leadership.
